Warmup to Refugio vs. El Maton Tidehaven

Having survived hurricane Harvey a year ago, the Refugio Bobcats must now prove they can recover from their 2018 loss to Mart in the state final and reclaim the coveted #1 spot in 2A D1 of Texas high school football.
Their first test will be whether they can tame a bunch of hungry Tigers.
The Bobcats open the 2018 season August 31 against Tidehaven, a 3A D2 team that lost only one game in 2017, to Lexington, 58-39, in the sub-regional round. On their way to a 11-1 season, the Tigers defeated both East Bernard and Boling. Lexington, of course, was the only team to inflict a 2017 loss on Mart.
David Lucio, a 1996 grad of the El Maton high school, is in his third  year as head coach at his alma mater. Previously he was head coach at Louise, 2014-2016, and before that, an assistant at Weimar and Bay City. His 2016 team’s record was 8-3. Like Refugio’s Jason Herring, he must rebuild for this year, having lost key members of his 2017 very experienced squad.
The 2018 opener, which has been moved to Refugio, will see junior Blake Garcia start his first game as the Tiger quarterback. Garcia did, however, acquire considerable experience in 2017. He will spread his passes around, with wide receiver James Carter and Alexander Hernandez as primary targets. Garrett Korff and Jesse Rodriquez head the offensive line. Carter, Hernandez, Korff and Rodriquez were 2017 all-district selections. So, the heart of a quick-stricking Tiger offense is in place.
The situation is even better for the Tiger defense, upon which Lucio will heavily depend in 2018. Karmon Green, the fastest Tiger, accounted for 117 tackles a year ago. He will be ably supported by the likes of DT Cade Calvan and DB Gordon Moreno, plus DB James Carter, who’s strong on both sides of the ball.
Refugio will counter with DT Armonie Brown, 6-2, 250, possibly the best college prospect who’ll play on Jack Sportsman field the last day of August. The Tidehaven game should show how much support he will have through November into December. Much of that support will come, no doubt, from Jake Tinsman, who has a knack for being where the ball is.
Who’ll be the Refugio starting quarterback? That’s a key question facing the Bobcats. The guy who was expected to be the starter, junior Jared Kelly, has chosen to concentrate on baseball. Most likely, stepping up in his place for the opener will be freshman Jordan Kelley, Jared’s brother, who’s never played in a high school game. Transfer quarterback Austin Ochoa should see action. At Gregory-Portland last year, Ochoa was selected Newcomer of the year in 5A District 30 by the CC Caller.
Ysidro Mascorro returns at running back for the Bobcats. Nathan Perez and DL Campbell should also contribute significantly to the Refugio running game. Tinsman will be an every-play offensive threat at wide-receiver, and, at times, possibly at quarterback.
