2019

You know you’re going there. You want to go there. But you’ve never been there. That’s what happens to us every year on December 31st.
Mostly we’re hoping for a great surprise: Good fortune. Good health. Closer family ties. More good friends. Less debt. Greater security.
Still one never knows. The New Year could be your best or your worst ever. It could also be just ho-hum, filled with routine stuff, in which there are minor moments of excitement.
Politically, there’s little chance that 2019 will be ho-hum. Already the signs are that we’ll spend the next 12 months sharpening the divisions separating us. In the closing days of this weary year, the pundits are already heating up their keyboards and searching the Thesaurus and every literary source available for metaphors that will more finely define either the glaring weaknesses in Donald J. Trump’s infantile policies or the blind elitism of many of his adversaries.
At the corner stands The Wall, both imaginary and real.
When history looks back on the years leading up to and following 2020, Trump’s obsession with The Wall will undoubtedly symbolize the failures of the period. For even if it’s built along every inch of the southern boundary of the United States, A Failed Policy will be stamped indelibly across it from end to end. For when America retreats from its ideals, the World suffers. Instinctively, when our minds are clear we know this, and so does every thoughtful person. Sealing the U.S. in signifies Failure, not Success
Unfortunately, many Americans are not so thoughtful in the closing days of 2018. They believe that If Only the president can achieve his goals, everything will be alright. America will be great and safe again.
So goes their wishful thinking.
Before us for certain, it says here, is a 2019 that will demand the best that is in us. And the opportunities are spelled: T-R-U-T-H, I-N-T-E-G-R-I-T-Y, C-A-R-E and O-T-H-E-R-S, at one and the same time.
