“The heart has reasons the mind knows not of” said the brilliant philosopher-mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) centuries ago.  For today’s world, there could  be no more poignant or more needed reminder.  Our global “Heart” has been badly wounded.

So it is closer to home, as Easter 2019 nears, public conflict rages in the United States of America, a nation divided against itself.  The bitter harangues from all sides have so polluted our collective mind that our democracy teeters on the brink of disaster.

Yes, that is the way it is!  The rule of law has retreated into the recesses of our national consciousness, in grave danger of becoming irrelevant.   “Christians” spout hatred.  Muslims and Jews know no barriers to their unending wars.  City folks look down on country folks.  Country folks flounder.   Across-the-board pain is so awful, youth and adults turn to drug and alcohol addiction in increasing numbers.   Suicides are reported with alarming regularity.  As the rich fatten themselves, the poor tighten their belts in bitter resentment.  Mood swings among the educated and the uneducated are so unpredictable there’s a pervasive and broad sense of “lostness” across the land.

Sadly, at the top of our miseries, we have an inexperienced, out-of-place "leader" with a frightening attraction to chaos.

It is not good for a sick nation to be led by a sick man.

One thing is clear:  We cannot argue ourselves out of our predicament.  Only divine intervention can save us!

How, not wishfully, but concretely?

By responding from our hearts, where live our shared understanding of compassion, justice, and, yes, how life is for loving one another—the Wisdom given us from on High.

Our national heart longs for the jolt that will reawaken it to the magnificent Destiny for which it was born.

“If they heart be as my heart,” let’s go!

It’s the only way!
