• Among the several shutouts in Week 1, perhaps the most impressive was Shiner's 21-0 defeat of big neighbor Hallettsville.
  • Others almost as impressive:  Newton put up 71 on Kirbyville; New London West Rusk, 45 on  Arp; East Bernard zapped Altair Rice, 15-0; and Refugio blanked El Maton Tidehaven, 35-0.  In 2A D 2, McCamey zeroed out Irion County, 58-0; and Clarendon defeated Lockney, 35-0.
  • On the other side of the scoreboard, pitch forks must have been flying along US 380:  Farmersville (51) and Cooper (54) combined for 104 points.
  • It has to be collusion.  There's no other explanation.  In 2A D1, all 10 teams in Districts 4 and 5 won their openers.  None of the games was even close.  Alvord's 30-12 win over Electra was by the narrowest margin, 18 points.
  • Only a few teams failed to live up to pre-season expectations.  There's still a lot of time to recoup, but Grandview, Italy, Tenaha and Big Sandy (Dallardsville) are surely among those hoping for a quick comeback from their opening losses;
  • As always, it's good to be pleasantly surprised, like by Blanco, Franklin, Groesbeck, Lovelady and San Saba.  So, stay tuned, there's going to be a lot more surprises over the next 14-15 weeks.
