When in mid-January you boast a 14-2 record and five or more other teams are doing even better, you know the competition for the title in your division is going to be tight, heated and awesome. And the Shallowater girls are in such a race. But an early look at the records shows there are at least four other teams who stand out as the division's favorites: Canadian (24-1), Columbus (26-0) Fairfield (26-1) and Jim Ned (23-1). So it is: Four of the teams (and there may be others who join them in stature) have but 3 losses total.
Columbus may be the real surprise. But the Cardinal ladies were not ranked in the Top 10 last week (Jan. 13), not even in the Top 25, which shows that our historical biases do not fade easily, and for good reason. Solid basketball programs have to be built. For 2020-2021 the Columbus girls were 21-4, losing in the area round to Blanco, 55-46. Brownfield defeated Fairfield, 68-64, for the 2021 title.
Long-time Card head coach Mike Ables is hoping, of course, that his ladies will advance all the way out of Region IV, won last year by Bishop.
