Texas 2A/3A Basketball Well Underway for 2022-23

Flatonia, CC London Pressing for Recognition

A quick look at the latest rankings of the Texas High School Basketball Coaches Association shows that much of the sports strength for the state's boys' teams lies north of I-10.  But teams from the “South” are rising, or hoping they will, namely  at this point in the season, Flatonia in 2A and Corpus Christi London in 3A.

It’s early, we know (Refugio has yet to post a record).  But Flatonia, at 14-1, looks to be a contender, with Big Sandy Dallardsville, the region IV favorite,  and Port Aransas and Thorndale making their presence known.

The citizns of Lipan no doubt took notice of Hawley wining the 2AD1  football crown and Albany upsetting Mart for the 2AD2 title last week in AT&T stadium.  But they did not linger long.  Lipan fans are full swing into basketball with the hometown team already sporting a 14 -1 record.

And would you believe?  The only loss for the Lipan boys has been to, yes, the football power Timpson, by a score of 45-42.  Timpson then lost to Martin’s Mill, 29-33, in the final of the Martin’s Mill tournament.

Meanwhile, the Lipan Ladies are doing quite well themselves, holding a 15-2 record, with losses only to Glen Rose, 51-36 and to Martin’s Mill, 49-45.

The chief district challenger to the Indians will likely be Tolar, whom they face at home on Jan 13, then there, on Feb 7.
