Defending the Indefensible

by A Lidden

When to shut up? When to stop making a fool of yourself?

The world would be a much better place if more people were able to answer these two questions in approprite ways at the appropriate times. But alas, such is not the case, especially among today's politicians who seek in vain to defend persons in high places who no longer possess a discernible ability to tell the truth, assuming they once had it, and whose personal, professional and business failures are well documented.

By contrast, how refreshing and hope-renewing it was  (Wednesday ) to watch Maryland congressman Elijah Cummings cut through all the garbage contaminating our politics and speak with compassionate eloquence about our need to "return to normal."

By "normal" I took Cummings to mean pursuing politics in keeping with the basic rules of mutual respect  and the core values inherent in American democracy.

Yes, for a few all-too-brief moments, Representative Cummings returned us to "normal." And it was wonderful!

But there was great tragedy in the memorable statement Cummings made to conclude Wednesday's' Congressional testimony by convicted felon Michael Cohen, the former attorney and "fixer" for Donald J. Trump: Those who most needed to hear it did not, including the nay-sayers in the hearing room,  not to mention the president himself and his core of hardened, blind followers who would defend him even were he known to be Judas Iscariot reincarnated.

Can a reasonable person defend a man who is known to be a proverbial liar, a business failure (four to six bankruptcies), a philanderer, a con-artist of the first order?

The answer is No! It's as simple as that.

But how do the deaf and blind react? With more lying, yet more dramatic blaming of others, and more unsubstantiated railings about a "deep state" attempting to pull off a coup d'état.

Such irrational reactions are what they are: pathetic evasions that would divert us from the Truth and away from the practice of genuine Democratic values.

Michael Cohen spoke the Truth in plains words: Donald J. Trump is a liar, a con, a cheat and a racist.

For me personally, the saddest part of the whole of our already voluminous debate about Trump is that persons I once admired, sometime good friends, they continue to defend a man proven to be a failed man and a failed president.  I weep over their blindness and even more over my inability to convince them how wrong and unChristlike they are.

But maybe, hopefully, prayerfully, under normal circumstances...

*Correction, an earlier edition of this piece wrongly stated the home state of Congressman Elijah Cummings.  He represents Maryland, not South Carolina.
