Two Region 4 favorites in 2A 2022 Basketball could face off just before the state meet, to decide which represents the region: Flatonia (24-4) or Mumford (19-7).
What makes this possibility all the more interesting is that it would pit Flatonia head basketball Coach Chris Sodak against his former assistant and former Mumford player, Aubrie King,
Aubrie led Sodak's 2014 Mumford team to the state 1A title. He then played two years for St. Edwards U. and his final two for Mary Hardin Baylor, following which Sodak hired him as his Flatonia assistant. Aubrie returned to his home school last summer when he accepted the position as its head basketball coach.
At present, Mumford (19-7) is leading District 26 and Flatonia (24-4) is at the top of District 28. Should both hold their leads and finish as their district’s #1, they would not, however, meet until the regional final; in post-district, Flatonia would compete in the upper bracket, Mumford in the lower.
There’s a long way to go, of course. Tuesday night, January 25, Mumford goes to Normangee, and Flatonia hosts Schulenburg. Both are district contests.
The Kings reside in nearby Milano, where Aubrie's father Alvie King once headed the basketball program, then was a Mumford assistant when his son was performing for the Mustangs.
